Stetson was founded in 1865 by John Batterson Stetson, who had learned the craft from his father. Stetson quickly grew to be one of the largest hat manufacturers in America. Buffalo Bill and Bill Rogers were some of their most prominent customers. In the beginning of the 20th century Stetson began to successfully create “modern” hats such as the Bowler, Cylinder, and Fedora. Stetson began producing Straw-Boaters, Trilbys and Panamahatsin the 40´s, which were worn as a status symbol by prominent individuals such as John Wayne and James Dean, among others. Stetson has been continuously successful since its founding, as they effectively combine modern influences with timeless classics.
